2. Riisitunturi National Park

Best for: snowy forests and the classic “snow monster” trees

Riisitunturi offers a very different winter landscape from Korouoma. Instead of steep canyon walls and frozen waterfalls, the main attraction is the forest itself. Heavy snow and moisture can coat spruce trees so thoroughly that they turn into huge white shapes commonly nicknamed snow monsters.

Choose Korouoma for frozen waterfalls, cliffs and a more varied landscape. Choose Riisitunturi for snow-covered spruce trees, open fell views and snowshoeing.

3. Ranua Wildlife Park

Best for: families and seeing Arctic animals

Ranua is one of the easiest longer day trips from Rovaniemi. The wildlife park is approximately an hour away and specialises in northern and Arctic species. It is a stronger choice than Korouoma if your priority is animals over landscapes.

4. Santa Claus Village

Best for: first-time visitors, children and Christmas atmosphere

Santa Claus Village is technically so close to Rovaniemi that calling it a day trip feels slightly generous, but practically it fills the same role in many itineraries.

A quick visit can take two or three hours. Families who want to meet Santa, eat lunch and add another activity can easily spend half a day or longer.

5. Arctic SnowHotel

Best for: something unusual without a demanding hike
