Best Frozen Waterfalls in Lapland: Where to See Icefalls in Winter

Where to see frozen waterfalls in Lapland: Korouoma Canyon for large icefalls, Auttiköngäs as a shorter stop, and how far each is from Rovaniemi.

Updated October 2026

If you want to see frozen waterfalls in Lapland, go to Korouoma Canyon. It is the one place within a day trip of Rovaniemi where you hike beneath large frozen waterfalls instead of looking at an iced-over river.

Lapland has frozen rivers, rapids, streams and icicles all winter, but few places where you can easily walk up to big vertical icefalls. At Korouoma, streams run down the high canyon walls and freeze into large icefalls every winter, one of the most dramatic ice landscapes in Finland.

1. Korouoma Canyon

If you want proper frozen waterfalls, not icy rivers and snow-covered rapids, this is where I would go.

Korouoma is a bedrock fracture valley near Posio, about 30 km long with walls up to around 130 metres high. The small streams that trickle down the cliffs in summer freeze slowly through the winter into wide frozen cascades, blue-white ice walls, long icicles and vertical pillars. There are fourteen frozen waterfalls along the hiking route.

Korouoma is also one of Finland’s best-known ice-climbing spots, so you may see climbers on some of the larger formations.

The easiest way to go is a guided day trip from Rovaniemi. Our pick is the Rovaniemi: Korouoma Canyon Frozen Waterfalls Hike & BBQ, rated 4.9/5 from more than 1,600 reviews, from $92 per person with thermal overalls, boots and a campfire BBQ included. If you are staying outside central Rovaniemi, the Wild about Lapland Korouoma tour (4.8/5 from more than 1,500 reviews, from $169) is the alternative; our comparison of Korouoma tours sets out the rest.

Why Korouoma Is Different

The canyon gives the icefalls their scale. Instead of one frozen stream seen from a roadside viewpoint, you walk through snowy forest between steep canyon walls and pass one ice formation after another. The winter route is usually 3–5 km of walking on snow, with a descent into the canyon and a climb back out; our Korouoma Canyon winter hiking guide covers difficulty, distance and what to wear.

How Far Is Korouoma from Rovaniemi?

Korouoma is about 115 km southeast of Rovaniemi. Allow about two hours each way by road in winter. Our guide on how to get to Korouoma Canyon has the route and parking.

Best Time to See the Frozen Waterfalls

For the most reliable ice, aim for January to March. December can also be very good, with less daylight. Our month-by-month Korouoma guide has the detail.

2. Auttiköngäs Waterfall

Auttiköngäs is the other Lapland waterfall I would seriously consider on a trip based in Rovaniemi. It sits about 80 km from the city, with a nature trail of about 3.6 km around the falls, according to Metsähallitus.

It has neither the scale nor the number of icefalls you see at Korouoma. What it does give you is a waterfall in attractive forest scenery, and it works well as a second stop on the same day. The From Rovaniemi: Korouoma & Auttiköngäs Frozen Waterfalls tour visits both, from $151 per person and rated 4.7/5 from 33 reviews, a smaller review base than the main Korouoma tours.

Korouoma or Auttiköngäs?

Choose Korouoma for large frozen waterfalls, several icefalls in one walk, canyon scenery and a full day of hiking. Choose Auttiköngäs for easier nature sightseeing and a shorter winter stop.

Are There Other Frozen Waterfalls in Lapland?

Yes, but many lists mix frozen waterfalls with rapids, rivers and icicles. If you are looking specifically for large vertical frozen waterfalls, Korouoma is the place that matches that picture most clearly.

Final Thoughts

For most visitors, two names are enough: Korouoma Canyon for the main experience, and Auttiköngäs as a second stop if you have the time.

If you only have one day, spend it at Korouoma. For the rest of your winter week, our best winter day trips from Rovaniemi compares it with the other options.
