The distances are the ones Metsähallitus, the agency that manages the reserve, gives for Route 81 towards Posio. A mapping app will usually quote a shorter drive time than you will see in January, because it assumes dry summer roads.
Is Korouoma Close to Rovaniemi?
Not really. The canyon is in the Posio region, southeast of the city, and there is nothing to see between the two except forest and the village of Pernu, where the Korouoma sign takes you off the main road. Posio itself is about 30 km from the Saukkovaara car park, but very few visitors stay there.
On a trip based in Rovaniemi, this means Korouoma takes one whole day of your week. You leave in the morning, you are back in the afternoon or early evening, and there is no time for a second big activity that day. If you have only two or three days in Rovaniemi, weigh that against the closer options in our winter day trips from Rovaniemi guide.
How Long Does It Take to Drive?
Budget 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours each way in winter. Snow on the road, low visibility and the last few kilometres of forest road to the Saukkovaara car park slow you down, and from December to early January you usually drive both ways in the dark.
Once you park, you are not yet at the waterfalls. The walk from the car park down to the canyon floor takes one to one and a half hours, and the guided route covers about 4 to 6 km with a steep descent and climb. Turn-by-turn directions, parking and the pickup areas are in our full guide on how to get to Korouoma Canyon.
Is Korouoma Too Far for a Day Trip?
No. Every Korouoma tour from Rovaniemi is a day trip of about seven hours. A typical day starts with a morning pickup in Rovaniemi and continues with three to four hours on foot in the canyon, including a campfire stop, before the drive back. You spend roughly half the day in the vehicle, which is the price of seeing the largest frozen waterfalls near Rovaniemi.
The Rovaniemi: Korouoma Canyon Frozen Waterfalls Hike & BBQ is a good example of how the day runs: pickup from your Rovaniemi accommodation, a 4x4 van for up to eight guests, thermal overalls and boots, and a campfire barbecue in the canyon. It is rated 4.9/5 from more than 1,600 reviews and starts at $92 per person. Our Korouoma day trip guide walks through the day hour by hour.
Should You Take a Tour or Drive Yourself?
Take a guided tour if you have not driven on snow and ice, or if you did not pack clothing for a cold day outdoors. The guide drives, the overalls are included, and you can sleep on the way back.
Drive yourself if you have winter-driving experience and want to choose your own start time or stay longer in the canyon. You will need a car with winter tyres and your own warm clothing, and the parking at Saukkovaara costs nothing. Our comparison of a guided tour vs driving yourself sets out the costs side by side.
Final Thoughts
At 115 km and close to two hours each way, Korouoma is a proper excursion from Rovaniemi, but you do not need to stay overnight to see it. Keep one full day free for it, and check tour availability for your dates early, because departures depend on the ice.
