How to Get to Korouoma Canyon

Korouoma is not near anything. The canyon sits in the Posio region of Finnish Lapland, about 115 km southeast of Rovaniemi, and the main trailhead at Saukkovaara is a further three kilometres down a forest road off the main highway. The Route: Rovaniemi to Saukkovaara
From Rovaniemi you take Route 81 southeast towards Posio. It is roughly 115 km to Saukkovaara, the main car park for the canyon, and in winter conditions you should budget 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours rather than the summer figure a mapping app will give you.
Watch for the Korouoma sign at Pernu village. From there it is about 3 km along a forest road to the Saukkovaara parking area, which has information boards and costs nothing. From the car park it is a further one to one and a half hours on foot down to the canyon floor, and the classic circular route — the Koronjää trail — is about 5 km with roughly 100 metres of descent and climb.
What the Drive Is Actually Like in Winter
Route 81 is a well-maintained main road, but it is a Lapland main road in January: packed snow, ice, reindeer on the carriageway, and long stretches with no lighting. In the deepest weeks of winter you will be driving both legs in darkness or twilight even on a midday trip.
If you are used to Nordic winter driving and your rental has proper winter tyres, none of that is exotic. If your winter driving experience is a few days in the Alps, it is worth being honest with yourself before booking a car. The last three kilometres of forest road are the part that most often catches people out — they are ploughed, but narrow.
The Bus Question
Buses run from Rovaniemi towards Posio and will drop you at Pernu, roughly 5 km from the trailhead. That is a real option in summer and an unrealistic one in January, when you would be walking 5 km of unlit road in the dark before you even reached the canyon path. Treat public transport as technically possible rather than practical for a winter visit.
Transfers: What a Tour Actually Buys
