The canyon sits in the Posio region of Finnish Lapland, about 115 km southeast of Rovaniemi, and the main trailhead at Saukkovaara is a further three kilometres down a forest road off the main highway. Guided Korouoma tours include the return transport and a guided hike. Most also supply thermal clothing and winter boots, many add snow grips, a campfire lunch and hotel pickup, and the listing names which of those you get. A taxi works out at the same driving time as your own car, but you pay for the driver to wait for the four or five hours you spend in the canyon, so it only makes sense when a group splits the fare.
The Route: Rovaniemi to Saukkovaara
From Rovaniemi you take Route 81 southeast towards Posio. It is roughly 115 km to Saukkovaara, the main car park for the canyon, and in winter conditions you should budget 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, which is longer than the summer figure a mapping app will give you.
Watch for the Korouoma sign at Pernu village. From there it is about 3 km along a forest road to the Saukkovaara parking area, which has information boards and costs nothing. From the car park it is a further one to one and a half hours on foot down to the canyon floor, and the classic circular route — the Koronjää trail — is about 5 km with roughly 100 metres of descent and climb.
What the Drive Is Actually Like in Winter
Route 81 is a well-maintained main road, but in January it is still a Lapland main road: packed snow, ice, fresh snowfall that cuts visibility, reindeer on the carriageway, and long stretches with no lighting. In the deepest weeks of winter you will be driving both legs in darkness or twilight even on a midday trip.
If you are used to Nordic winter driving and your rental has proper winter tyres, none of that is exotic. If your winter driving experience is a few days in the Alps, be honest with yourself before booking a car. The last three kilometres of forest road most often catch people out; they are ploughed, but narrow.
The Bus Question
Buses run from Rovaniemi towards Posio and will drop you at Pernu, roughly 5 km from the trailhead. That is a real option in summer and an unrealistic one in January, when you would be walking 5 km of unlit road in the dark before you even reached the canyon path. Public transport is technically possible in winter, but not practical.
Transfers: What a Tour Actually Buys
Because the drive is the hard part, the cheapest guided products on this route are essentially transfers.
