Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls Tour from Rovaniemi: What to Expect

What Is Korouoma Canyon?

Korouoma is a long geological fracture valley near Posio in Finnish Lapland. For most visitors coming from Rovaniemi, the attraction is what happens here in winter. Small streams descend over the high rock walls and freeze into huge icefalls.

Some look like giant frozen waterfalls. Others spread across the rock in layers of blue, white and translucent ice. Korouoma has also become one of Finland’s best-known areas for ice climbing.

What Happens on a Korouoma Tour from Rovaniemi?

Most tours follow a similar pattern: morning pickup in Rovaniemi, a transfer of around 90 minutes to two hours, several hours hiking in the canyon, stops at the icefalls, a campfire break and return to Rovaniemi in the afternoon.

This is not a paved attraction. Expect snowy forest, uneven paths, downhill and uphill sections, potentially slippery surfaces and changing conditions.

How Difficult Is the Korouoma Hike?

Depending on the weather, you might see long icicles, broad walls covered with thick ice, blue-white ice columns and frozen cascades spreading over the rock.

Is There a Campfire Lunch?

Usually, yes, although exactly what you get varies. Campfire stops are a common part of Korouoma tours and may include grilled sausages, snacks, hot juice, tea or coffee, or a simple barbecue lunch.
