The daylight figures are timeanddate’s sunrise and sunset tables for Rovaniemi in February 2027. The temperatures are the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s 1991–2020 averages for Rovaniemi airport, about two hours’ drive from the canyon. Our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit compares February with the rest of the season.
Is February a Good Time to Visit?
Yes. If you are choosing your Lapland dates around Korouoma, February is one of the strongest options. The ice has had about two months to build since the falls began freezing in mid-December, the ice-climbing season is in full swing, and you get enough light to walk the whole route without hurrying.
Are the Waterfalls Fully Formed?
Usually, yes. February is one of the most reliable periods for them because the ice has had weeks of hard frost to thicken. Mammuttiputous, the roughly 60-metre ice wall at the end of many tour routes, is normally climbable, and you will often see climbers on it. How much ice forms still depends on the winter, so a mild spell can leave some smaller falls thinner than usual.
Is February Better Than January?
For many visitors, yes, mainly because of the extra daylight. The ice is similar in both months, and the cold is too: the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s averages for Rovaniemi airport give both months a mean of −10.3 °C. The difference between them is light. Mid-January gives you about four hours of daylight, and mid-February about eight. Our page on Korouoma in January covers the darker month in detail.
Is February Better Than March?
Choose February for the deepest winter atmosphere: full ice, deep snow and frost on the trees. Choose March if photography matters most to you. On 1 March Rovaniemi gets 9 hours 55 minutes of daylight and on 31 March 13 hours 34 minutes, and the ice usually holds through the month. Tour availability thins in March, so book earlier if you choose it.
How Cold Is It?
Still very cold. The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s 1991–2020 averages for Rovaniemi airport are a daily high of −7.3 °C and a daily low of −13.3 °C in February, and the record low there is −35.0 °C. A cold week can sit far below the averages, and the canyon floor can feel colder than town because cold air settles in it. Standing still below an ice wall at −25 °C feels very different from walking.
What Should You Wear?
Dress in layers for a full day outdoors: thermal base layers, a wool or fleece mid-layer, insulated outerwear, winter boots, thick mittens or gloves with liners, a warm hat and a neck warmer. Many guided tours supply thermal overalls and boots, which matters in February because this is one of the two coldest months. Bring your own base layers, hat and gloves. Our guide to what to wear for the Korouoma hike has the full list.
Will You See the Northern Lights?
Not on the tour, which runs in daylight, but February is a good month to try in the evening. The Finnish Meteorological Institute names February and March among the best months for auroras in Finland, and puts the chance on a dark, cloudless night at about one in two in central Lapland and one in four around Oulu; Rovaniemi lies between the two. Cloud is the usual problem, so plan a separate aurora evening and keep a spare night.
Is February Good for Photography?
Very good. February may offer the best balance between developed ice, deep snow and usable daylight. The sun stays low all day, so you get long shadows and warm light on the ice for several hours. March gives you more light for photography; February gives you more snow and frost to go with it.
